The Treaty for the Rights of Women (officially known as the United
Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women or CEDAW) provides an international standard by which
countries can be held accountable for protecting the human rights of
women.
Created in 1979, the Treaty is an important tool for all those
who seek to end abuses of women and girls throughout the globe. The
Treaty for the Rights of Women seeks to end violence against women,
ensure access to education and health care, provide equal protection
before the law and prevent other abuses of human rights.
***Currently, the United States is the only western country not to have
ratified the Treaty.
