Followup: I only heard about the event on Friday - not much time to spread the word. My husband said he would come with me, and how about fish and chips for lunch? It was not an ideal day for it, as after weeks of sunny weather, Mother's Day arrived with gusty (but welcome) rain. So with big umbrellas, we stood in the mist, jingled the little bells and quietly looked out to sea, watching the ocean for whales. A couple of surfers were enjoying the waves, and in spite of the weather, Woolgoolga Beach was as beautiful as ever, giving us hope that if some things are still right with the world, perhaps there's hope we can save some for the kids and fix the rest that need fixing.
I will be at the Woolgoolga Beach Reserve (near the playground opposite the shops) with anyone who cares to join me. The view up the coast is one of the most beautiful in the world and a most appropriate place to make a stand for the kids. There are benches to sit on for those of us who can't stand, too. Come along no matter what gender! |

So I have arranged to meet my children and my seven grandchildren at a small park in Little Keen Street, Lismore, New South Wales, Australia.
In Little Keen Street Park on the 13th May, a community group are holding a Swap Meet Fundraising event (Noon to Dusk) to help with the upkeep and sustainability of the Little Keen Street Community Garden.
People are being invited to come and swap or trade items, there will be raffles, performers, massages and food for sale. People will also be invited to join in a working bee if they choose to.
I am looking forward to my first experience in sharing with Standing Women to save the world.
Sounds wonderful.

It felt wonderful, as if something very powerful was in the process of creation. Then I went and stood in our garden in the patio area and looked over at Mt Clunie, to give thanks for the beauty of the Earth and the Grace of being able to live in the wonderful mountain area of the McPherson & Border Ranges.

I live on 5 acres with a small country cottage surrounded by rainforest in Northern NSW in Australia. I live close to the ocean, to beaches like Kingscliff, Kirra, Coolangatta and near the mountains such as Mt Warning.
My children went to a small primary school with 34 students where all the children looked after each other.
The Tweed Valley is still a very beautiful rural area, but unfortunately it is being more and more developed, and I fear for the loss of the habitat and flora and fauna in the area.
Australia is a lucky country and I am very blessed to live in such a wonderful place.
I do whatever I can to stop the destruction of the rainforest and coastal areas.
I am actively involved in environmental issues in our area. |

Followup: I was standing with my partner by the edge of the River Torrens in Vale Park. There were a couple of small family groups nearby having picnics for Mothers Day and others walking past - some with their dogs.
It was peaceful a beautiful experience, standing hand in hand, realising that others of our friends would have joined us if they had not former commitments due to the Day. We felt the spirits of others, the warmth and would do it again. Next time I hope for more to gather with us - those we know and maybe even those we don't - I was secretly hoping for others to just come up and join us. Thank you

Thank you for reminding me to join the standing women tomorrow. I have already registered my details but wanted to add something. In your email today you said, "Many of you have expressed the sense that this is a long-awaited moment. We also feel the possibility of our collective grassroots arising." I'd like to say that was precisely my first reaction to your original email. Although I have to say that, initially, I wasn't very impressed with the idea as a form of demonstration, the spontaneous thought that arose was, "So, it's come at last", as if it were a call I'd been expecting. It was also a very emotional moment. I think that came from somewhere else and this is a very important event for Mother Earth and all of us.
Thank you for initiating this action.

Since our establishment in 1998, we have conducted number of projects, researches, seminars, workshops and other events to promote and to protect women and children rights especially who are more vulnerable to become human trafficking victims or modern slaves. All our activity is targeted to prevent them from these disasters and to attract the attention of all society to the problems of women, especially girl children in the rural regions of Azerbaijan. All our activity demonstrate that the undrelying reason for the people who become victims is social and economic problems in this regions. Number of people in Azerbaijan still who had to become refugees have to live in refugee camps where there is not ordinary condition to live. I would like to stress that these camps are in the desertlike regions of Azerbaijan where there is pure water shortage and where people have been waiting for returning their homes nearly for 15 years. And unfortunately, most of these people are innocent women and children......... who are under the pressure of these circumstances become the victims of human trafficking and modern slavery. |

AFter speaking to children at Knox United Church about Julia Ward Howe and telling a peace fable from "A New Day: Peacemaking Stories and Activities", my husband and I walked to The Peace Grove situated on the Bow River. Here we stood in silence, then walked around a boulder in the centre of a circle of 12 elm trees. Afterward, I gave peace tattoos (from PeacePlease.com), a copy of Julia's declaration to a family there. |

There is a beautiful park by the Bow River, with wonderful views of the surrounding peaks of this beautiful national park. I may be alone there, and I may be up to my knees in snow, but I can do it for 5 minutes. In 5 minutes, I believe I can touch the lives of others. In those same 5 minutes a person could do a lot of harm to another. Even if no one sees me, I believe in positive energy and my presence will be felt. |

Followup: I began the Mother's Day "stand" on Friday at our regular Women in Black silent vigil in downtown Calgary. I gave out information about the Sunday initiative on our handouts. The handouts always tell about the origins of WiB in Jerusalem, the worldwide connection and give local Alberta information about peace initiatives.
Sunday morning at Scarboro United Church I invited people to stand with you/us and then read Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day proclamation during the service.
At 1:00 we were home from church and I stood on our back terrace with my husband. We lit our peace candle.

Followup: Under a light rain we gathered on the atrium of Galt Gardens. There were mothers and fathers and children and babies. Some people held hands and two women had beautiful baba bells that they rung to start us off. The smallest baby chattered away throughout the 5 minutes which was a wonderful reminder of why we were there: children's innocent chattering needs to be heard instead of shouts, bombs and war.

Good Evening, Just attended a lecture with Jean Shinoda Bolen and she told the audience all about you. I have not contacted all the women in our circle yet, but we will be outside on the beach either at English Bay or in North Vancouver. I am going to get as many as I can together and even though it is Mother's Day, many do not have children or not cherished by them so we should have a goodly number.
Glad to have found you and thank-you for this.

Followup: I went to a site listed under the places noted for Victoria: under the large oak trees in front of Oak Bay Municipal Hall. I was there too early as I thought we were to meet at noon. I looked all around the building for others and came across a woman lying on the grass reading a book. I asked her if she was there for the StandingWomen event. She said no and asked about it and when I told her she said she really liked the idea and would like to stand with me. So we stood together under the oak trees for 15 minutes and then ended up talking deeply together about our lives. It felt very good for both of us.
I then went off to visit a friend and realized, from talking with her, that I had gotten the time wrong. My friend asked if I wanted to head back for 1:00 but I said no, I had obviously been early as I was meant to meet the other woman and that was why I was there. Both of us had bonded - ever so briefly - as two women striving to better our lives, and, as a result, the lives of those around us. Pretty special!

Actually our dog will probably run around and sniff stuff while we stand. Standing overlooking the city, the mountains the valley, in the breeze, the rain the sunshine, |

We stood there last year with tears flowing down our cheeks in the silence. Was the best Mother's Day ever! Those of us who participated said we will always keep this as our first tradition of Mother's Day! Everyone is so welcome to come and stand together at 1pm on Mother's Day!
Ringing the bell of freedom, healing and peace. Let the energy of Mother Divine fill the earth on that day and in the days to come! Hope to see you there! |

Followup: We emailed each other and some of us showed up at the beach on time and some of us were late as we were looking for a parking space and had kids in tow.
We stood overlooking our magnificent beach with distant mountains on the other side of the waters of Georgia Strait. It was dreamy and vast.
Afterwards we chatted, talked about broombusting (we have invasive Scotch Broom on Vancouver Island) and just said hello to each other, some to new friends and some to old friends. It was good.

Followup: Hi, My Friend Ruth and I had agreed to stand at the Rose Garden in Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia at 1p.m.
Traffic being what it was we entered the park at 1p.m. so we picked the closest spot, fortuantely it was a beautiful grove with tall trees and daisies. We dug out our bells and stood. We captured attention of surrounding folks and a parking attendant, wanting to give us a ticket, as I forgot to feed the meter in the rush...we stood for our five minutes and smiled when it was over. Ruth read the affirmation from the website and the local paper and we felt good. Thank you for the opportunity to stand united with women all over the world.

Followup: 24 men and women, all storytellers, gathered at Klee Wyck, an arts centre in West Vancouver over the weekend to tell the stories of ancient Ireland, the Fianna Cycle. This is the 7th year of our epic gathering, always telling a different cultural epic. Today, after our stories ended, we gathered under a handkerchief tree on the grounds at the agreed time. One of us told the story of the standing women, another offered stones collected from Ireland, and another played the kantele as we sang the ancient Irish blessing:
Deep peace of the running wave to you, deep peace epace of the flowing air to you, deep peace of the shining star to you, deep peace of the silent earth to you. We stood quietly in communion with all of you around the world.

Followup: A friend and I went to the park to do our Standing. One woman was already there, standing alone. The three of us moved to a location where we could see the spire of the Town Hall, then began our five minutes of silence. As we finished, a mother and young daughter arrived and began their own Standing.
I made the commitment then, and expressed it aloud so all could hear, that I would do a Standing every Sunday at 1:00 pm, provided I'm in town.
As Coordinator of a group and growing national movement of women in poverty, I'm increasingly out of town doing workshops or presentations at conferences and other events. On those occasions, if I'm not otherwise engaged, I'll make an effort to do a Standing in the community I'm visiting.

Followup: Under budding trees in a very late and cold spring in our small town in Northern Canada 25 people gathered on City Hall lawn to stand in solidarity with grandmothers and people everywhere who know that what we are doing and what has been done in this world is not working, and that change has to come from a new direction: the wisdom of elders, the knowing of grandmothers, and the inclusion of women who make up 52% of the population of the world but are without equal status with men.
The standing left me feeling spiritually stronger, more determined and hopeful for change, and very grateful to be part of a gathering of people worldwide whose priority is human emotional and physical health and wellbeing.
The standing has left me with renewed certainty and determination to speak out about what I know to be wrong: ageism (in either direction) sexism, racism, and violence of any and all kinds especially verbal and emotional violence.

I am going to STAND. Anyone who wants to join me, I’ll be in …..Dominion Brook Park, here in North Saanich. I guarantee there will be at least one woman standing for everyone to have a fresh clean drinking water, clean air, enough food for all, access to education, lack of violence and a safe place to call home. I’m sending off emails to all my friends. My husband, daughter and son have decided to join me now that they see how important this is to me. Want to come? Talk with your family and friends, ask them to join you, and us. If you cannot, don’t worry, it’s just as good to stand quietly at 1:00pm wherever you are on Sunday and be in spirit with me and all the women around the globe who are visioning and working for a better world.
In this small seed is a very beautiful flower of immense possibilities. Women have the power to effect change, and using our skills of nurturing, gentleness and intuition, we will save our world. I have never felt stronger about that. Thanks for considering coming along, and for reading this far, so I can do my little bit to get this movement of women taking a stand to save our world, rolling! |

Followup: We gathered in the sanctuary of the the Unitarian Universalist church at 12 noon to discuss a resolution of our denomination on climate change, and set priorities for what we want to work on as individuals, as a church and as a denomination. Then as 1 PM approached we joined in singing Gaia by Joyce Poley. This was followed by a brief introduction to the five minutes of silence. The silence was begun and ended with the striking of our meditation bowl.
Several other members who could not stay for the event said that they would be observing the five minutes of silence wherever they found themselves. Perhaps a dozen others would have observed the silence
A number of us, women, men and perhaps some children too, will be standing in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg. From 12 to 1 we will gather to talk about what we can do individually and collectively about global warming. We will all bring pictures of our children and grandchildren and will make a montage to remind us for whom it is that we want the world to be saved. We will begin the five minutes of silence by striking our meditation bowl and will end it the same way. |

I will be standing in my garden praying that our government wakes up before it is too late.
Mother Earth is showing how angry she is for being raped and neglected in the name of "corporate greed". We rallied here in April with the people from Grassy Narrows, who after 40 years of pleading for help to clean up the Mercury poisoned waters, again fell on deaf ears. Mercury has devastating effects on the neurological systems of children and adults. How sad it was to read in the Toronto Star 3 days later that the government was spending $55 Million dollars to give City Hall's Nathan Phillips Square a face lift! First Nations peoples continue to get their resources stolen while they live in poverty. The government continues to pollute our air, water and land. We must Pray for the well-being of the next 7 Generations...this is very serious. |

I will be standing in the field behind my house. I will be thinking of the woman i helped give birth to twins in South Africa because she was too poor to go to the hospital. She gave birth on the side of the road in plane view of everyone. I will remember Iggy who cleaned the house that i stayed in and loved the banana bread that i baked and shared it with her over tea. I will remember the little girls that get raped because men think if they have sex with a virgin their hiv status will become negative. I will think about the asia girls who are sold into sex slavery because their families can not afford to feed them. I will think of the little girls who are left as orphans in Japan and China because women are not reviered like men are. I will think of the missing prostitues on the east side of vancouve bc canada who were murdered doing their "job". I will think of all the women who are descriminated against in a mans world. |

"Women Arise" will host a gathering in the London Peace Garden on Sunday May 11th at 12:30 pm. We will read the "standing women postcard" to focus our minds on what we are standing for, then ring bells and meditate together for 5 minutes. Following this, we will read the "Mother's Day Proclamation" by Julia Ward Howe, one of the inspirations of the standing women movememnt; followed by a community weaving ritual on a giant web - to entangle the powers that harm our children. We invite all born of a woman to join us in the Peace Garden at this time, and bring songs to sing. Gloria Thomson, 519-686-0813 |

From the bounty of nature we can learn much, from the teaching of our elders we can learn much, as individuals we can change much and maybe for the first time in history if we all stand together mankind itself can change |

Followup: As my mom & I stood on the grounds of the former Loretto Convent, they came. Women, men, children & dogs. We formed a circle and introduced ourselves to one another. The sun reflecting on the golden dandelions.....it was beautiful. We rang all kinds of bells, a small boy with his dad, rang his bell with passion and laughter and then silence....we honoured the peace and the difference we could make in our world. And then the bells sounded again....we chatted about the experience and vowed to come back again next year.
I will stand on the grounds of Loretto Convent. Women have graced this location since 1856 and we will return on Sunday, May 13. Join us...stand for the future. |

Followup: On a warm welcoming day we started with a Pali Chant: wishing all living beings live happily,
Free from animosity, Free from anmity, share in the blessings that will be gained from the merit
of our good deeds.
At 1:00 p.m.we silently meditated on this for 5 minutes and followed with herb tea, scones, jams and discussion.
It was peaceful and beautiful.
We will stand in Nature's Pathway Herbs park like setting
situated amongst the beauty of nature. We will stand in silent meditation
to create a positive energy that will resonate through the universe;
creating peace and healing.

Followup: First there were two, then four, than another three, then two more, then.... From down the hill, over the fence, up from the street, from across the stairs, they came to answer the call from StandingWomen.org. We intuitively formed a circle. Women and men and children and Coyote, the dog came together in the lush clover with the majestic Loretto Convent building boarded up and empty behind us. We casually introduced ourselves to one another as we rang our Tibetan bells and cow bells and school bells and silver bells to announce the location. And then at 1:00, we held the silence. Sometimes the noise from the busy street or voices from the top of the hill intruded, but this circle held the silence. In those five sacred minutes, our silent intentions joined the bustle and rode the gentle spring wind to join with others who were also standing. A few cars slowed down and drivers and passengers looked with curiosity up the hill. A chill snaked up my spine as I looked around and beheld the circle of strangers and friends and family standing together to change the world. This silence was golden indeed! When the bells rang out to end the silence, my soul sang.

Followup: I own a house and property in Temagami. I was there to do much needed garden and bush clean-up.

Many animals have been spotted on my property which makes me feel good.

Hamilton |
 |
 |
Followup: Three of us - 2 grandmothers and one not-yet-but-hoping - travelled together from our home in Dundas to the City Hall of Hamilton. A little uncertain, but carrying our little bells just in case.......
There was no obvious gathering, but we eventually encountered two other women - one quite young, the other perhaps more seasoned. We smiled at each other, and enquired : "Are you here to Save the World?"
Yes indeed. They were.
This little ragtag collective stood together, enjoying the purple pansies and smiling out at ruffian sparrows and the streaming traffic on Main Street. Five minutes passed in a moment. After the closing bell-chime, we spoke quietly of what had just transpired, and shared our sense of invisible connection with others who have stood together. "See you next year !"
Today, (Monday May 14th) as I discover this website for the first time, I am moved to realize how correct was our intuitive sense of "we are part of something larger". Of course, we ALWAYS are, but it's so easy to forget.
in gratitude,
& with deep bows.

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS
Our daughters push beyond us,
when the power is strong,
unrolling the future to
certainty.
We can no longer stand
behind our rules. We have
only our word and theirs
to be free. All we can do
is learn without
obligation. To. From.
I free you free me.
Liberation intertwined
with a difference.
The cycle of generation
spirals once more.
We return to our mothers,
offering them the gift
our daughters offer us.
MAKE IT GLOW
For those mothers who remain
ashore and shoring, mending
the holes, cutting the cords,
gathering stray strands.
Weave the common thread
wide and strong. Make it hold.
Make it glow like that
first cord we almost
remember, the one they
cut off too soon.
WELL
For the mothers
who spot the pattern
and laugh
laughter
digs wells in
the dried clay
our tears made moist.
We are jars that love
has filled emptied
and fills again. |

A place along the Thames River, called Meadow Lilly. The path meanders alongside the river, the Deer cross our path, the resident Hawk comes to visit, many Geese follow the river's path which flows in a east/west direction. The Squirrel family tells us noisly of our approach, and the many winged Creatures sing to us.
Where I shall place my feet is along side a small ravine, where a Evergreen Tree, White Pine to be exact has placed her trunk with an opening for us to sit and rest.
Reminds me of my Mother, in all ways giving me a place to rest, be restful, collect my thoughts, sleep when necessary, energize me with her healing, love and adoration. As I write this, I ask this message also to reach my Mother, Mary Therese, which will firstly travel through Mother Earth, become spirited and cleansed, as it swiftly sends loving messages to Mom. Luv YA Mom.
As I write this message, my thoughts go forward to my own daughter and son, as they grow richly in motherhood and fatherhood, for the equilbrium of nature, seed and germination shall be balanced. This I trust in our Divine Order.
I am happy to reach this site, Thanks to Richard from Care2Connect. Namaste' |
