The canyon also had its dark side. In February 1958, Louie Gerbus and I almost killed ourselves in a car accident on the upper road beyond the ranger station. On June 2, 1960, the S'60 class lost its first classmate, and a friend of mine, Mel Jordan, in a car accident that happened shortly before entering the canyon. If I remember correctly he was going to fast, missed a turn, and hit a tree. Two weeks before we were to graduate, what a damn shame.
