"Watching the terrible disaster in New Orleans awoke in my heart the warning: This is just the beginning. If any of the catastrophes that are predicted -- such as global warming, where whole sea coasts could be inundated, where there will no water, no food, no law enforcement at an even greater scale, we need to be prepared in a new way, something we have not had to do before, perhaps since we lived in small tribes many thousand of years ago. This preparation will have to create new systems of cooperation and caring for each other at the grass roots level. It cannot come from the top down, but also, it cannot simply be chaotic, for the worst elements then rise to action. This made me realize that not only is it vital that we connect that which is creative and compassionate now to foster the emerging world, but that the connectivity of people at the grass roots level in some coordinated fashion is essential for life."
