"In myths and fairytales, as in dreams, the psyche tells its own story, and the interplay of the archetypes is revealed in its natural setting as 'formation, transformation/the eternal Mind's eternal recreation.'"
Collected Works - Carl Jung

I live in Israel with my three dogs and I work as a Technical Writer.

I was born and raised in New York City, the younger child in a materialistic prestige-addicted family with much physical and emotional abuse and without any real love or empathy. This experience left me with deep internal injuries (feelings of anxiety and depression related to not belonging, not having a home, being disconnected and devoid of meaning), from which I have been recovering slowly.

I graduated medical school in 1977 and worked as a psychiatrist until 1987. In August 1981, I realized that many, if not most, of my patients were not in any discrete disease category (as I had been taught), but rather were experiencing a variety of psychosocioeconomic dislocations. Most of them had views which, while valid, contrasted sharply with the views of those in their social network. I discovered that if I simply listened to them attentively, and refrained from directiveness, that they ended up providing their own answers to their own questions, thereby healing themselves in the presence of my "catalysis". Because of my discovery, combined with my instinctive sensitivity to the issue of human rights, I refused to engage in the standard psychiatric practices of coercion, manipulation, intrusiveness, authoritarian posturing, diagnosing, and forced medication. As I recognized that the field of Psychiatry had now evolved into a system of taking people with minority opinions and controversial lifestyles and subjecting them to various forms of discrediting and disenfranchisement, I left the field of Psychiatry in 1987.

I had extreme difficulty finding work for the next five years. I obtained a certification in Electronics and Computer Technology but could not find work. I then obtained certification as a Wastewater Treatment Operator, but again could not find work. Because of my discouragement and feelings of isolation and failure, I participated in three self-help groups that were of great assistance to me: Co-counseling, Emotions Anonymous, and Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families.

Finally, in 1992, after acquiring Teaching Certifications in Math, Chemistry, and Biology, and continuing to be unable to find work, I took the advise of one of my mentors and emigrated to Israel. This mentor had seen something about my personality and told me that he thought that I would find in Israel a human atmosphere much more to my liking and that I would be able to find work without the types of problems that I was experiencing in the US. He was right.

I have been working now as a Technical Writer for 10 years. I do not go out much, except to take my dogs for a walk, but I like to read spiritual works and sentimental stories. I am fascinated by psychic phenomena, and have even had low-grade psychic experiences myself. I contribute to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and MoveOn. I enjoy reading about the developments in the fields of human rights, animal rights, environmental protection, renewable energy, and progressive politics. I recently began volunteering at a local animal shelter.

Because I still suffer from anxiety and depression related to isolation and alienation, I find it helpful to participate in self-help groups as well as spiritually oriented communities. I seek out resonance and empathy with open-minded people. It has been a lonely journey for me, and it helps to be in contact with others on the path with me.

My Dream
I often dream of being a part of a caring community that I can call home (and really feel it); a community of people that know about and care about what others are doing, and who are committed to the principle that every member is to be included and valued.

Interests
I like to read spiritual works, sentimental stories, and information about psychic phenomena. I enjoy reading about the developments in the fields of human rights, animal rights, environmental protection, renewable energy, and progressive politics. I contribute to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and MoveOn. My most central interest is my caring for my 3 dogs.
